Understanding Specialized Tutoring

Tutoring is a powerful tool for helping students overcome academic challenges, recover lost skills due to extended absences or crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, and bridge learning gaps commonly experienced by students with learning difficulties. Research from EdResearch for Recovery (February 2021) highlights that tutoring significantly enhances learning outcomes for a diverse range of K-12 students.

Studies reviewing decades of tutoring interventions have found that, on average, tutoring boosts academic achievement by an additional three to 15 months of learning across different grade levels. Another analysis of nearly 200 studies identified high-dosage tutoring—occurring three or more times per week or totaling at least 50 hours over 36 weeks—as one of the most effective school-based strategies for improving math and reading skills.

While tutoring can be a financial investment, its substantial impact on academic success makes it one of the most cost-effective educational interventions available. Notably, tutoring is especially beneficial for students from low-income backgrounds. A 2017 study examining educational strategies for elementary and middle school students from disadvantaged backgrounds found tutoring to be the most effective approach—outperforming interventions like progress monitoring, cooperative learning, computer-assisted instruction, and more.
